Prior to mechanical refrigeration, ice was the principal means of preserving perishables. Loading ice blocks into the rooftop hatches of solid reefer trains was a challenging task, but for the construction of icing platforms that elevated the ice to car height, enabling quicker icing and re-icing. These platforms on major refrigerator routes were often expansive, with some stretching up to 50 car lengths. Typically, the ice house was annexed to the platforms to ensure a swift ice supply.
