I think it's no exaggeration to say he was a pioneer who built American underground culture. I first learned about him from the documentary film "Crumb," and it was quite a shocking film... In an atmosphere of tension, where you couldn't tell when the family would fall apart, completely different from what people say about being "sick," I couldn't help but feel something when I saw him transforming his negative emotions into an energy that could be called obsession, and scribbling them in his sketchbook. The expressions and storylines wouldn't be able to debut in society today. I think it's impossible to talk about subculture without mentioning him. Even such niche comics as his, I've been able to find in cool bookstores all over Europe, as far as I know. He himself said it started with a single copy machine at home, but what's important is passion. From subculture to the mainstream. From America to the world.
