Most dental facilities discharging wastewater into public treatment works must install an amalgam separator by June 14, 2020. Best practices prohibit waste discharge into waterways and amalgam flushing into drains. Certain dental specialties are exempt, such as oral pathology, radiology, surgery, orthodontics, periodontics, and prosthodontics. Dentists removing amalgam in less than 5% of procedures only need to file a one-time compliance report. Practices removing 9 or fewer amalgam cases per year may not require a separator. Facilities not discharging wastewater into public treatment works, mobile units, and existing separator users are exempt. All dental offices must submit a one-time compliance report by October 12, 2020.
